mySalam 2026: who qualifies, how to check (semakan), benefits and how to claim
mySalam is a free takaful protection scheme for lower-income Malaysians. If you receive Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), you and your spouse are covered automatically, with no sign-up and nothing to pay. The Budget 2027 speech confirmed it continues next year. Here is what it pays for, how to check your status, and how to claim.
- mySalam covers STR recipients aged 18 to 65 and their spouses. Enrolment is automatic through STR data, so there is no registration and no contribution.
- It pays RM8,000 once if you are diagnosed with one of 50 critical illnesses, including cancer, heart attack, stroke and, since 2025, some mental illnesses.
- It also pays RM50 a day when you are admitted to a government hospital, for up to 14 days (RM700) a year, and helps with some medical devices.
- You claim online on the mySalam portal or at mySalam kiosks in government hospitals. Missing documents are the main reason claims are rejected.
- About 1.88 million people had received mySalam payouts by the end of 2025, totalling RM1.42 billion.
What is mySalam?
mySalam is a national health protection scheme launched in 2019 for the B40 (lower-income) group. It is funded through a trust fund managed by the Ministry of Finance and administered by Great Eastern Takaful Berhad. It doesn’t pay your medical bills. Instead it gives you cash when you are diagnosed with a serious illness or admitted to hospital, to help with lost income and other costs.
It is separate from PeKa B40, which offers free health screening and other help for STR recipients aged 40 and over, and from MediAsas, the voluntary medical insurance plan starting in January 2027.
Who qualifies for mySalam in 2026?
- STR recipients aged 18 to 65, and their spouses, are covered. About 9.15 million STR recipients are eligible in 2026.
- Coverage is automatic. mySalam uses the STR records from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), so you don’t need to register or pay anything.
- If you don’t receive STR, you aren’t covered. If you think you qualify for STR but haven’t applied, apply for STR first through LHDN.
Coverage follows your STR status for the year, so check your status each year rather than assuming you are still covered.
mySalam benefits
| Benefit | What you get |
|---|---|
| Critical illness | RM8,000, paid once, if you are diagnosed with one of 50 listed critical illnesses |
| Hospital income | RM50 a day when you are admitted to a government hospital, up to 14 days (RM700) a year |
| Medical devices | Help with the cost of some medical devices, such as heart stents, of up to RM30,000 |
The 50 critical illnesses include common conditions such as cancer, heart attack, stroke and kidney failure. From 2025, the list was expanded from 45 to 50 illnesses, adding conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, thalassaemia major, aplastic anaemia, psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris, rheumatoid arthritis and some rare diseases. The full list is on the mySalam website.
The hospital income is paid for stays in government hospitals, which reports describe as including military and university hospitals. It is not paid for private hospital stays.
How to check your mySalam status (semakan)
- Go to the official mySalam website at www.mysalam.com.my.
- Choose the eligibility check (semakan kelayakan) and enter your MyKad number.
- The result shows whether you are covered for the year.
“mySalam login” refers to your account on the same website, which you sign in to with your MyKad number. You use it to check your status, submit claims, follow a claim and update your bank details.
Beware of fakes. mySalam is free. Use only the official website, and never pay anyone or share your banking password to “register” or speed up a claim.
How to make a mySalam claim
You make the claim yourself. The hospital doesn’t submit it for you. You can claim:
- online through your account on the mySalam website, or
- at a mySalam kiosk: there are more than 140 in government hospitals.
Documents you need:
| Claim | Documents |
|---|---|
| Critical illness | The mySalam critical illness form completed by your doctor, and a copy of the front and back of your MyKad |
| Hospital income | Your hospital discharge note, and a copy of the front and back of your MyKad |
Upload clear PDF or JPEG copies. Approved payments go into the bank account registered in your mySalam account, so make sure your details are correct.
Deadline: claims have had to be submitted by 30 June of the following year. For example, 2025 claims were due by 30 June 2026. Check the website for the current deadline and claim as soon as you can.
Why mySalam claims are rejected
A November 2025 report found that only about 54% of claims made from 2019 to 2024 were paid. Common problems include:
- missing or unclear documents, such as a blurry discharge note or an incomplete doctor’s form
- an illness that isn’t on the list of 50, or doesn’t meet its definition
- a stay in a private hospital, which isn’t covered for hospital income
- not being an STR recipient, or the spouse of one, in that year
- a claim sent after the deadline
If your claim is rejected for missing documents, collect them and claim again before the deadline.
