BMI calculator (Malaysia): check your BMI and healthy weight range

Body mass index (BMI) is a quick way to check whether your weight is healthy for your height. Malaysia uses Asian cut-offs, so a BMI of 23 already counts as overweight, not 25 as on many international charts. Enter your height and weight below to check yours.

Key points
  • BMI = your weight in kg divided by your height in metres, squared.
  • Malaysian (Asian) cut-offs: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–22.9 is healthy, 23–27.4 is overweight and 27.5 or more is obese.
  • International charts use 25 and 30. Malaysia uses lower cut-offs because Asians develop diabetes and heart disease at lower weights.
  • A waist of 90 cm or more for men, or 80 cm or more for women, signals extra risk even at a healthy BMI.
  • More than half of Malaysian adults are overweight or obese. Losing just 5–10% of your weight improves blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.

BMI categories for Malaysians

BMI (kg/m²)Malaysian categoryInternational (WHO) category
Below 18.5UnderweightUnderweight
18.5–22.9Healthy weightNormal
23–24.9OverweightNormal
25–27.4OverweightOverweight
27.5–29.9ObeseOverweight
30 and aboveObeseObese

The Malaysian categories come from the Ministry of Health’s Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Management of Obesity (2nd edition, 2023). They follow a World Health Organization expert review, which found that Asian people have a high risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease at BMIs below the international cut-off of 25.

How to calculate BMI (cara kira BMI)

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m) × height (m)

Example: someone who weighs 70 kg and is 1.65 m tall:

  1. Height squared: 1.65 × 1.65 = 2.72
  2. BMI: 70 ÷ 2.72 = 25.7

That counts as overweight under both the Malaysian and international cut-offs. The difference shows at lower and higher BMIs: a BMI of 24 looks “normal” on an international chart but counts as overweight in Malaysia, and a BMI of 28 counts as obese in Malaysia but only overweight internationally.

What is my ideal weight? (Berat badan ideal)

There is no single “ideal” weight. A better guide is the healthy weight range for your height, which is the weight that gives a BMI between 18.5 and 22.9:

HeightHealthy weight range
150 cm41.6–51.5 kg
155 cm44.4–55.0 kg
160 cm47.4–58.6 kg
165 cm50.4–62.3 kg
170 cm53.5–66.2 kg
175 cm56.7–70.1 kg
180 cm59.9–74.2 kg

The calculator above works out the range for your exact height.

Why your waist matters too

Fat stored around the tummy is more harmful than fat elsewhere, raising the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. In Malaysia, a waist circumference of 90 cm or more for men or 80 cm or more for women counts as abdominal obesity, even if your BMI is in the healthy range.

How to measure: stand up straight, breathe out normally, and wrap a tape measure around your middle halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, usually around the belly button. Keep the tape snug but not tight.

Limits of BMI

BMI is a useful first check, but it doesn’t measure body fat directly:

  • Muscular people, such as athletes, can have a high BMI without excess fat.
  • Older adults may have a normal BMI but less muscle and more fat.
  • It isn’t suitable during pregnancy.
  • Children and teenagers are assessed with BMI-for-age growth charts, which compare them with others of the same age and sex, not with the adult categories.

A doctor can look at your BMI together with your waist, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol for a fuller picture.

Overweight and obesity in Malaysia

The National Health and Morbidity Survey 2024 found that 53.6% of adults were overweight or obese (30.5% overweight and 23.1% obese), and more than half had abdominal obesity. Among children and teenagers aged 5 to 19, more than 1 in 4 were overweight or obese. These figures use international cut-offs, so more people would count under the Malaysian ones.

What to do if your BMI is high

  • Aim for 5–10% weight loss first. For someone weighing 80 kg, that is 4 to 8 kg. Even this much improves blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Eat smaller portions, especially of rice, noodles and bread, fill half your plate with vegetables, and cut down on sugary drinks, including teh tarik and sweetened kopi.
  • Move more: aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as brisk walking, each week.
  • Get checked. A high BMI or waist is a reason to test your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. See our guides to normal blood sugar levels and blood pressure and cholesterol.

Lifestyle change is the first step in the Malaysian obesity guideline. For people with a high BMI who haven’t lost enough weight with lifestyle changes alone, doctors may add weight-loss medicines, and bariatric surgery may be considered for a BMI of 37.5 or more, or 32.5 or more with conditions such as diabetes. See our guide to weight-loss injections.

If your BMI is below 18.5, or you have lost weight without trying, see a doctor to check for an underlying cause.

Where to get a weight and health check

A GP can check your weight, waist, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, and help you plan safe weight loss. If you receive STR and are 40 or over, the screening may be free through PeKa B40. Our directory lists GP clinics across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and other states.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal BMI in Malaysia?

For adults, a healthy BMI in Malaysia is 18.5 to 22.9. A BMI of 23 to 27.4 is overweight and 27.5 or more is obese.

How do I calculate my BMI?

Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, 70 kg ÷ (1.65 m × 1.65 m) = 25.7.

Why are Malaysian BMI cut-offs lower than international ones?

Asian people tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI and develop diabetes and heart disease at lower weights, so Malaysia uses 23 and 27.5 instead of 25 and 30.

What is my ideal weight for my height?

The healthy range is the weight that gives a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9. For example, for someone 160 cm tall, that is about 47 to 59 kg.

What waist size is too big?

In Malaysia, a waist of 90 cm or more for men, or 80 cm or more for women, signals abdominal obesity and a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Is BMI accurate?

It is a useful first check but doesn’t measure fat directly. It can overestimate fat in muscular people and underestimate it in older people, and isn’t used in pregnancy or for children.

How much weight should I lose?

Start with 5 to 10% of your current weight. That amount already improves blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.
